K-96 June Jaunt Activities: Rural Activities

{This is part 8 in a 9 part series about the different activities you can experience during the K-96 June Jaunt.}

Now that you've been introduced to all of our fine communities along K-96, we're sure you're ready to begin planning your trip to get you from point A to point B. If you're not sure how to best plan your route for the K-96 June Jaunt, over the next few weeks you can find the events here by categories of interest. These categories will be: Arts, Antiques, Crafts, Cuisine, Family, History, Music, Rural Activities, and Shopping. Use these categories as a guide to find the best activities suited to your interests. Or for a more adventurous traveler feel free to jaunt wherever the wind blows come June 1-3. Our writer for this blog falls more into the first category of planning, but we welcome all types.

When you think of western Kansas, you probably think rural. We're bringing you events that could be found anywhere, but we must be true to our roots so get ready for some events that will bring you a truly rural experience. 

Dighton's Rural Activities:
  • Free Hay Rides - All Day on June 1-3 starting at Long Street
Ellinwood's Rural Activities:
  • Petting Zoo - All Day on June 2 at the American Legion Parking Lot

Great Bend's Rural Activities:
  • Walking Birdhouse Tour - All Day on June 1-3, maps availabe at 3007 10th Street
  • Straw Bale Buildings Tours from 1-4PM on June 1-2 at Heartland Farms, 13.4 miles W on US 56; 1 mile S on SW 10 Rd.
  • Kansas Wetlands Education Center Van Tours at 10AM and 2:30 PM on June 2 at 2200 Main
  • Hap Dumont Baseball Tournament - All Day on June 2-3 at the Great Bend Sports Complex at 41 McKinley Street 
Leoti's Rural Activities:
  • Rural Life Craft and Demonstration Fair from 10-2 on June 2 at 206 S. 4th
  • Cole Hudson Memorial Rough Stock Challenge at 7 PM on June 2 at 502 E. M, sponsored by the Leoti Rodeo Club
  • Wichita County Top Shot Contest Sponsored by Pheasants Forever 647 at 1 PM on June 3, just off of K-96 - 2 miles east of Leoti and 6.5 miles west of Leoti. Watch as some of the best shooters in Wichita County compete for the title of Top Shot to commemorate the bloodiest county seat fight in Kansas.
Rush County's Rural Activities:
  • Kansas Barbed Wire Museum Tours from 10AM-4:30PM on June 1-3 at 120 W. 1st in Lacrosse
Scott City's Rural Activities:
  • Heartland History on the Highway, Historical Re-enactment at 2 & 4PM on June 2, 1 PM on June 3 at 902 W. 5th
  • Scott County Historical Society's Battle Canyon & Buffalo Tours from 1-5 PM on June 3 at 902 W. 5th
Tribune's Rural Activities:
  • Big Boys-Big Toys Show from 11AM-5PM on June 2 at 1001 Ingalls
  • Farm Critters Petting Zoo from 11AM-5PM on June 2 at 1001 Ingalls
  • Poker Run Kick-off at 10 AM on June 2 from 208 W. Kansas
  • Community Picnic in the Park from 6-8PM on June 2 at 1001 Ingalls
  • Bingo at 5:30 PM on June 3 at 411 Broadway
It doesn't get more rural than hay rides, rodeo and bingo with the locals! Be sure to make a stop at one of these events to have a truly rural experience during the K-96 June Jaunt!
