K-96 June Jaunt 2012 Recap: Tribune

As we begin our journey in planning the 2013 K-96 June Jaunt, we have taken the time to reflect about all the fun we had in 2012 with the first K-96 June Jaunt! If you missed any of the fun, be sure to follow our recap series!

Residents and guests enjoyed events in Tribune for the 2012 June Jaunt.  Downtown, local merchants reported strong sales and garage sales around town attracted many in and out-of-town shoppers. Volunteers reported significant numbers of visitors to the Greeley County Museum and the VFW’s Bingo appeared to have a good crowd Sunday night.  The Class of 2014 and 2015 hosted a car wash, Poker Walk, and joined in on the sidewalk sale fun with tables in front of Colorado East Bank & Trust.

Thirty-five bikes took part in the Trench’s Poker Run.  Though the weather put a damper on the evening’s activities, organizers said they had a great day for the ride.

Forty-six vehicles took part in Greeley County Recreation’s first-ever K-96 Tribune June Jaunt Car Show on Saturday.  Trophies were awarded to the top fifteen cars, which were selected by their peers, and People’s Choice went to Brad & Sue Mann and their 1970 Ford Mach 1 of Dighton. Kansas cars participants were from Tribune, Winona, Goodland, Dighton, St. Francis, Garden City, Grinnell, Oakley, Scott City, Leoti, Holcomb, Ulysses, Hugoton, Syracuse, Liberal, and Bird City. Cars from Colorado were entered from Pueblo West, Eads, and Lamar.

Local farmers provided an enlightening and enjoyable experience for youth and adults alike with the Big Boys Big Toys show.  The display, organized by county extension agent Todd Schmidt, used signage to explain each piece of equipment’s use and walk people through the process of growing a wheat crop from start to finish. Nearby, Greeley County 4-H youth and their parents provided animals and great enjoyment for the kids at the Farm Critters Petting Zoo.

The Greeley County Swimming Pool hosted a free swim Saturday afternoon, which attracted a number of locals as well as group of international cyclists who happened to be passing through.

Gale force winds and damaging lightening forced the Community Picnic and Movie in the Park into the 4-H building. The Star Theater board appreciates those who braved the weather to attend and plans to try another movie in the park later this summer.
Though it wasn’t a planned event, Greeley County Volunteer Fire Department’s and Greeley County EMS service’s rapid response to the number of lightning-sparked fires is greatly appreciated.  Thanks, too, to the Wichita and Wallace County Fire Departments for providing additional help fighting the blazes.

After the weather had cleared Saturday night, the Full Moon in June 5K and 10K was held as scheduled.  Fifteen runners braved the post-storm country road to participate in the race.

Sunday’s Four-Person Scramble with $1,000 in added money attracted 13 teams of golfers.
Mark your calendars now and make plans to be in town for next year’s June Jaunt, scheduled for the first weekend in June in 2013.

K-96 June Jaunt 2012 Recap: Leoti

As we begin our journey in planning the 2013 K-96 June Jaunt, we have taken the time to reflect about all the fun we had in 2012 with the first K-96 June Jaunt! If you missed any of the fun, be sure to follow our recap series!

Residents and visitors alike enjoyed the activities in Leoti during the first K-96 June Jaunt. The weekend was full of shopping and perusing stores in Leoti and enjoying time outdoors in one form or another. Many visitors enjoyed the canopy of trees by our county courthouse during the craft and demonstration fair where they learned about rope making, the job of a farrier, and were able to buy baked goods and weaved wheat décor. The tours of the Historic Washington Ames House drew a large crowd on Saturday morning and afternoon. The Washington Ames house recently underwent a beautiful restoration. In fact, it received its first layer of tinted primer on the Friday of the K-96 June Jaunt. Leoti’s geocache/questing was hidden just outside of the Washington Ames House.

Saturday evening folks gathered from all around to watch some of the oldest form of rural entertainment – broncs, bulls, and cowboys competing in the Cole Hudson Memorial Rough Stock Challenge. Many of the participants and spectators braved the weather as a dirt storm rolled along K-96 to see the challenge out to the end. There was laughter echoing from the First Presbyterian Church all weekend as the Wichita County Arts Alliance performed their annual play which included humorous skits about communication. Leoti was also a stop for an outdoor movie, showing the Kansas classic, Wizard of Oz, where Kansas scenery filled the screen.

We’re looking forward to having participating again next year. We plan on continuing the craft and demonstration fair and look for the return of the Cole Hudson Memorial Rough Stock Challenge. Of course, be sure to look for another movie at City Hall and sidewalk sales lining the streets as you pass through on K-96. We enjoyed our guests that joined us here and there. Wichita County and Leoti looks forward to welcoming you to our community next year during the K-96 June Jaunt and always. Leoti…it’s a great place on the Great Plains!
